Chamber EventsMay 10th Day in the Shade Celebration of the ArtsThe sleepy little town of Templeton comes alive every Saturday morning when the whistle blows and Farmers Market opens for business. The quintessential Norman Rockwell setting in Templeton Park is the ideal location for this market, and people come from far and wide for the experience. In addition to the vast array of luscious fruits, vegetables, and flowers, on Mother’s Day weekend visitors to the market can also shop for paintings, jewelry, stained glass, ceramics and more while enjoying live entertainment, great food, and fine wine. The Templeton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the 6th annual “Day in the Shade: A Celebration of the Arts”, which will be held on Saturday, May 10th, in Templeton Park from 9am until 5pm. The goal of the promoters at the onset of Day in the Shade five years ago was to create the most upscale art festival in the North County, if not all of SLO County, putting Templeton on the map as a destination for fine art, music, wine and the best place to spend Mother’s Day weekend. That goal has come to fruition. This year over 75 of California’s premium artists will be participating, many of them returning for the fifth year in a row. The proven success of this festival has secured a place on the SLO County Calendar of events for years to come. This fine arts and crafts festival takes place the day before Mother’s Day, and is the perfect place to shop for your Mother’s Day gift, or just bring your Mom out to spend a lovely day in the Park. There will be fine juried arts and crafts from all over the state, food, wine, live music, entertainment and activities for children, including “Professional Show-off”, Trey Cromwell, who delights his audience by sword swallowing, fire juggling, and more. We invite you and your family to come spend a Day in the Shade in Templeton, Mother’s Day weekend, this year and in years to come! Admission is free. July 4th Community Parade Fourth of July CelebrationYears ago, Templeton became known for its Fourth of July parade and activities. Today the tradition continues, as the town continues to open it’s Main Street and Park to several thousand people. Festivities kick-off with the Annual Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Templeton Fire Department Firefighters beginning at 7:00 a.m. Breakfast is followed by the Home Town Community Parade commencing at 10 a.m. Parade entries include: the proud members of the American Legion, Post 220 with their Honor Guard Members grandly carrying the colors; following the Color Guard are horse drawn carriages; brightly decorated truck and trailer floats carrying local preschool children, church groups, and social organizations; antique car clubs; military tanks from Camp Roberts; children on bicycles, unicycles, skates and scooters; several horse clubs, the occasional family entry with one or two children in tow via a red flyer wagon accompanied by a pet dog, goat, or mule; the Templeton Middle School Marching Band; local politicians; and additional fun and sometimes quirky entries. Anyone wanting to celebrate home town spirit and community pride is encouraged to participate. To date, the Templeton Kiwanis Club has graciously coordinated the parade without charging entry fees. Their time and dedication to preserve this hometown tradition is greatly appreciated. Immediately following the parade, an auction is held by the local Templeton Lions Club in the County Park. In accompaniment with the auction in the park are non-profit concession booths providing information and selling food and beverages, as well as music in the gazebo. Families spread out their colorful quilts and beach chairs to enjoy picnic lunches in the mid-afternoon sun and small children swarm the park playground equipment. It is hometown Americana at its best. Visitors are reminded that “Safe and Sane” fireworks are permitted in certain areas of Templeton. To ensure that a safe and enjoyable environment is maintained throughout the holiday period, visitors and residents alike are reminded that illegal fireworks are not allowed and include: firecrackers, cherry bombs, M80’s, bottle rockets; and mortar shells (anything that flies through the air or explodes!). Community groups gather at 7 a.m. on July 5th to clean the park of any firework debris that may have been left from the previous evening celebration. It is the community’s desire that visitors and locals alike share safe and happy memories of the Templeton Fourth of July celebration, so that the tradition carries on. Nov. 16th Founders Day CelebrateFounder’s Day The celebration of Founder’s Day in Templeton is an event not to be missed. On November 16, 2008 the celebration of Templeton’s 122nd birthday begins. Founder’s Day was established by the Templeton Historic Museum Society to celebrate the history and heritage of Templeton. Templeton was founded in 1886 when C.H. Phillips of the West Coast Land Company sent R.R. Harris to survey acreage south of El Paso de Robles. The town was named for San Francisco financier’s son, Templeton. The first train (Southern Pacific Railroad) arrived on October 18, 1886 and the first passengers disembarked on November 20, 1886. Celebrate good times in Templeton…come one, come all!
